FOURTEEN

Fifty-Five Minutes

The first part of the briefing was like any other where half of the people attending were new. It started with Minh-Chu reiterating standards for everyone so they knew when and where to show up for every part of their job, what gear they should bring, and what they should check on or refresh their memories on before they got there. Put simply, the meeting and calendar functions were handled by their command and control systems. The locations they needed to turn up at were usually presented with the reminders they would get with those too. As for what they needed with them, well, Minh-Chu had changed the standard so they had to be fully equipped at all times with their vacsuits, armour - which was hidden in their jackets and boots except for their new helmets - along with their flight and ground kits. The only time a combat pilot could go without all their gear was when they were in their bunk or quarters. That got some groans from the group of pilots who sat in chairs that were exact copies of the cockpit seats in the Archangels.

It was a full house, with fighter and corvette pilots in the front rows. To the left and right sat holograms of Captain Marda and Captain Blake. All of them had been through the Haven Fleet Clearance Program, there was no doubt that they could be trusted. Everyone there would have some part in the mission, and Minh-Chu knew that even more people were listening in, like Captain Vega, who was sitting on the bridge. Well, not all of them were listening to the details of the new standards for his pilots, at least he hoped they weren’t. Unless you were a pilot, they were pretty boring, despite his efforts to keep things moving along.

The last point he highlighted during the first fifteen minutes of the briefing - the Standards Review - was that every pilot had to be completely up to date and tested on the features, capabilities, and operational characteristics of their fighter. They also had to be aware of the same for every ship involved in the mission whenever possible. All the pilots in the room were up to date on the ships they would be flying except for four of his squadron members.

It wasn’t one of those that asked the question when he came to the end of the Standards section of his briefing and gave everyone a few minutes for queries, however. It was Pixie. She had set her seat to the largest size and was sitting with crossed legs in the middle of the expanded seat cushion. He was happy that wasn’t her habit when she was in a cockpit. “So, why do we have to know what every ship on our mission list can do, even if it
